Located near the bustling city of Naples, Pompeii is located on a coastal plateau. The city, along with its sister city of Herculaneum, is situated in the shadow of the ominous Mount Vesuvius. Those who have heard about this once great Roman city know one thing for sure, life at Pompeii and Herculaneum came to a sudden halt in 79 AD when Mount Vesuvius exploded. The explosion and the resulting outpouring of lava lasted two days and enveloped the entire area in a thick cloak of smoke and dust. With temperatures rising beyond 250°C, most of the residents of Pompeii and Herculaneum met a fatal end, most deaths due to sheer suffocation caused by the thick smoke.
While this disaster has become almost synonymous with Pompeii, the city was once a center of opulence and wealth. Ironically, the volcanic eruption that destroyed the city also resulted in its preservation. Covered in 4 to 6 meters of ash upon its discovery in the 18th century, subsequent excavations have revealed a perfect snapshot of the day Pompeii met its end. Currently, Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that greets 2.5 million tourists from all over the world.
Careful excavations and restoration works provide a unique insight into not just the life of the residents of the city but Roman citizens in general. Overlooking the sea, Pompeii was a wealthy city that was the playground of the rich. Its architecture shows many luxurious buildings, from public baths to amphitheaters. The city was specifically known for its wines since the alluvium-rich slopes of the Vesuvius were especially hospitable to grapevines. Pompeii’s fateful demise now provides the perfect place to visit and witness the glory of the Roman Empire at its peak.
Visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum
Excavated from under 12 different layers of soil, the sister cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum are among the most popular tourist sites in the world. A trip to Italy is incomplete without a tour of Naples and the neighboring cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Spanning an area of 44 square hectares, Pompeii provides ample space to explore and discover. By contrast, Herculaneum is just 4 square hectares. This is because while Pompeii was a major center of trade, Herculaneum was a resort town. The ruins of both cities offer a varied variety of views.
Pompeii encompasses the opulent lifestyle of the Romans, and you can see Roman architecture up close and personal. Visit the amphitheaters where gladiators fought valiantly or the temples of well-known Roman deities. Even the mundane is extraordinary as visitors can peek inside the houses of the citizens of Pompeii and envision the life of an ordinary Roman living in the city.
A visit to the city of Herculaneum is also a must. Though much smaller in size and much less well-known, it happens to be in an even better condition than Pompeii. Tourists are now turning their attention to Pompeii’s sister city as well since it provides an entirely different experience and takes much less time to explore. So if you have a tight schedule and have limited time to spare, Herculaneum is the best choice.
If getting an authentic Roman experience wasn’t enough, you can visit the mountain that caused the destruction as well. Mount Vesuvius, for all its fury, is open to tourists. It is an active volcano, the last eruption dating to 1944, which provides a serene view that hides the terrible power within the mountain. Viewing Vesuvius is a great way to wind up the tour of the area after having toured Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is the perfect conclusion considering the history of the place.
