Is a day trip from Rome to Pompeii worth it?

Yes, if you have only one free day. Pompeii is the most complete Roman city that survives anywhere in the world, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and rediscovered in the 18th century. A private driver is the most comfortable way to see it from Rome: no train change in Naples, no Circumvesuviana, no waiting for buses, and a vehicle ready to take you up the volcano in the afternoon.

The itinerary

Morning: from Rome to Pompeii

Your driver picks you up at your hotel in Rome early in the morning and drives south on the A1 motorway. You arrive in Pompeii in about 2 hours and 45 minutes, with a short coffee stop on the way if you like.

Pompeii archaeological site

Spend 2 to 3 hours walking the original Roman streets: the Forum, the Temple of Apollo, the theatres, the Stabian Baths, frescoed houses such as the House of the Vettii, and the plaster casts of the victims. The site is very large, so a licensed guide makes the visit much easier; we can help you arrange one on request.

Lunch

Your driver can suggest a restaurant near Pompeii or a winery on the slopes of Vesuvius, where the volcanic soil produces wines such as Lacryma Christi.

Afternoon: Mount Vesuvius

The driver takes you up the volcano to the car park at about 1,000 metres. From there a path of about 30 to 40 minutes leads to the edge of the crater, with views over the whole Bay of Naples. Access requires a ticket and can close in bad weather or strong wind; in that case we suggest an alternative such as Herculaneum.

Evening: return to Rome

You drive back to Rome and are dropped off at your hotel in the evening.

Good to know

  • Book Pompeii and Vesuvius tickets online in advance, especially from April to October.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, sunscreen and a hat: there is little shade on the site and on the volcano.
  • Children are welcome; child seats are available on request.
  • Prefer a different route? We can also include Herculaneum, the Royal Palace of Caserta or a pizza lunch in Naples.
